Without a doubt, MF 4&5 Live at Jimmy's is my favorite MF recording. This particular band was spirited, and very talented. Maynard showcased a number of talented players that came through the ranks, played some nice charts, and put on an exciting concert. While this is a must have for trumpet players, the band has a solid rhythm section, and features some terrific saxophonists.
While some of the arrangements do sound dated (Mr. With this CD, you can appreciate what those bands of the early '70s sounded like. One of the first jazz recordings I had, and still a favorite. I can't believe they finally got around to releasing this one on CD. On this afternoon they came prepared to blow the walls down, and did just that. Throughout the recording, Maynard confidently leads the charge with his familiar altissimo trumpeting.
I saw the MF band later on in their career (early 80s) and if they played any of the material from the early records it was usually buried in some medley. Bruce Johnstone is a very fine player, as is Ferdinand Povel. (I think Mr. During the "duet" with Bruce Johnstone during Two for Otis, they pull out all the stops. Those early MF Horn records showcased some adventurous music, and great bands. Povel spent the bulk of his time in the Netherlands playing and teaching, but on this record he does some awesome soloing). Long, long ago I burned my own CD from my LP copy.
His gorgeous playing on the ballad arrangement of I'm Gettin' Sentimental Over You is a real treat. But, there's more variety here including a great ballad number. Ferguson's recordings of that era were in keeping with the times), the music is very well played. This record includes some favorites, and some just plain smokin' numbers.
As always, the trumpets just punch, the saxes, especially the bari sax work is rich and reasonant and if you can't tell that Maynard is just having a great time then you're not listening.Vintage Ferguson; if you think you know Jazz and you don't know this album, you don't know all there is to know about Jazz.Kevin BrettCEO, Kevin Brett Studios, Inc.Author: "The Way of the Martial Artist: Achieving Success in Martial Arts and in Life"The Way of the Martial Artist: Achieving Success in Martial Arts and in Life.Producer: The Art of Intelligent Driving (DVD)The Art of Intelligent Driving The sound is really excellent which is difficult to achieve in many live performances. This album is such a kick. The whole live feel just makes this a nightclub party with Maynard.
I just ordered it and can't wait to get it. I have been waiting YEARS for this to be released on CD like so many other people. I will be playing it in my car non stop. This is the best album Maynard ever released. I own several of Maynard's albums and this one was always on the turn table or in my cassette deck.
Album, quality & service all top rate. New album for me - great live Maynard Album.
Enough said. My boys love LaFiesta and now they will know the true meaning of Maynard Ferguson. I wore this album out on vinyl.twice when I was a young trumpet padawan. This recording drove my parents crazy, annoyed the neighbors and inspired me.
